How United Kingdom charges imports

Duty is assessed on the customs value of the shipment — the goods value plus freight and insurance (CIF basis). The base rate follows the product's HS classification, so two parcels of the same value can face very different duty. Shipments valued under 135 GBP clear duty-free, though VAT still applies. This relief is due to end: in July 2026 the UK government confirmed it will remove the 135 GBP duty relief and introduce new arrangements for low-value imports; until that takes effect the current rule stays in force. Duty free under GBP135; VAT collected at point of sale under 135. Source: GOV.UK, 13 Jul 2026.

Frequently asked

Do I pay duty on shipping into United Kingdom? Yes — United Kingdom uses the CIF basis, so freight and insurance are added to the goods value before duty is worked out.

Does the country of origin change what I pay? Yes. The base rate is set by the product, but trade agreements and additional measures are set by origin — the same goods can clear free from one country and carry an extra levy from another. Use the route pages above for your specific lane.

How current are these rates? Base rates come from the official tariff schedule and are refreshed weekly. Last verified 05 Oct 2026.
