How Canada charges imports

Duty is assessed on the customs value of the shipment — the goods value plus freight and insurance (CIF basis). The base rate follows the product's HS classification, so two parcels of the same value can face very different duty. The duty-free limit depends on origin: courier shipments from the United States or Mexico are duty-free up to 150 CAD (tax-free up to 40 CAD) under CUSMA, while goods from all other countries are free of duty and tax only up to 20 CAD. Rates by country of origin

Origin decides which tariff measures apply on top of the base rate. Pick where your goods ship from:

Frequently asked

Do I pay duty on shipping into Canada? Yes — Canada uses the CIF basis, so freight and insurance are added to the goods value before duty is worked out.

Does the country of origin change what I pay? Yes. The base rate is set by the product, but trade agreements and additional measures are set by origin — the same goods can clear free from one country and carry an extra levy from another. Use the route pages above for your specific lane.

How current are these rates? Base rates come from the official tariff schedule and are refreshed weekly. Last verified 05 Oct 2026.
